Susan Brockman: Soft Network 01
I contributed an essay to Susan Brockman: Soft Network 01. This book is the first to focus on the life and work of Susan Brockman (1937–2001), a prolific American filmmaker and artist who was involved in the feminist art movement, the documentary filmmaking community, and the downtown New York art scenes of the 1960s–90s. Through her distinctive approach to framing, editing, and collage, Brockman created interior worlds and tableaux that have a palpable but enigmatic emotional resonance. Brockman neither sought nor received much critical attention during her lifetime, and her work was largely forgotten in the years following her death. In 2021, Soft Network began a three-year journey with her archive, a project that uncovered her striking contributions to the history of experimental image-making. This book charts the organization’s research process and methodology, laying bare the effort that goes into caring for and creating access to an artist’s legacy and proposing new ways of considering what legacy work can mean.

Writing Toward Dawn: Selected Journals 1969–1982
I edited the selected journals of Donna Dennis, an architectural sculptor, installation artist, and long-time collaborator with the New York School poets. Animated, self-searching, and direct, these journals document her struggle to find her distinctive feminist approach to art; her heady downtown crowd of lovers and friends; her emerging political consciousness; and her growing confidence in her own work, marked by her fevered arrival at the 1982 Venice Bienniale. This volume traces the early development of a major American artist and illuminates the collaborations, experiments, dancing, and grassroots organizing among a creative avant-garde. Published by Bamberger Books. Read an excerpt in The Paris Review and order here.
